Rice Bran Powder – Food for Live Food Cultures

Rice bran is an easy, economical and highly effective food for culturing Moina, Daphnia, Grindal worms and Infusoria. It is our go to food for these cultures because it is convenient to store, simple to use and supports dense, productive cultures. Rice bran also provides a nutritious gut load, helping increase the nutritional value of the live foods before they are fed to your fish.

Feeding Filter Feeder Cultures - Moina, Daphnia & Infusoria

Place a small amount of rice bran in a piece of old cloth and wrap securely. Submerge the cloth in a small container of aquarium water and squeeze repeatedly. This releases the fine particles and creates a milky suspension.

Add the suspension sparingly to your culture, aiming to maintain only a very light haze in the water. For best results, feed every 1–2 days, adjusting the amount according to the size and density of your culture.

A little goes a long way. Avoid overfeeding, as excessive rice bran can reduce water quality.

Feeding Grindal Worms

Sprinkle a small amount of rice bran powder over the surface of the culture medium. Start with only enough to create a light dusting. Add more once most of the previous feeding has been consumed.

For easier harvesting you can place a piece of plastic, tile or glass on top of the culture after feeding. The worms will congregate on the underside making them easy to collect and rinse before feeding to your fish.

Excess rice bran can spoil so it is better to feed small amounts frequently than to add too much at once.

For aquarium live food cultures only. Not for human consumption.
