Grindal Worm Starter Culture

This offering is for a Grindal Worm starter culture, consisting of hundreds of live worms together with culture bedding packed in a 4" x 3" breathable bag. With hundreds of worms included, this starter provides an excellent head start toward establishing a productive culture.

Grindal worms are one of our favourite live foods and are used extensively in our hatchery. Their convenient size makes them extremely versatile. We feed them to everything from two week old fry to fully grown adult fish.

One of the biggest advantages of Grindal worms is that they thrive at normal room temperature. Once a culture becomes well established you may be surprised by just how many worms can be harvested on a daily basis.

Culturing Instructions

Grindal worms do very well in soil or coconut coir approximately 1" deep. Keep the culture medium consistently damp, but not waterlogged.

For food we recommend rice bran (available here). Sprinkle a small amount over the surface of the culture every few days and place a small tile or piece of glass directly over the feeding area.

As the culture becomes established, the worms will congregate around the food and collect on the underside of the tile or glass. Simply lift it from the culture and the worms can be easily harvested and fed to your fish.

Feed sparingly and increase the amount gradually as the population grows. A healthy, established culture can provide a continuous supply of fresh live food with very little maintenance.
